Healthcare
If you are a holder of an
E106, E121, or another E form, you must register this with your local
CPAM office.Details of your local office can be found at www.ameli.fr
For the duration of these forms the UK government will pay a standard
charge to the French government. On expiry of your E form, this
payment will cease. You will then be required to take out full, private
health insurance to cover all your medical costs because due to
changes introduced in 2007, as a general rule, you will not be allowed
to join the French contributory health scheme. Once you have lived in
France in a legal and stable manner for 5 years, you will be entiotled
to join the contributory scheme ( CMU).
Whilst you are covered by an E form, the following will apply;
The system in France is based on private medical facilities, with the
state refunding ONLY approximately 70% of the costs incurred.
Everything is priced - a visit to your doctor, prescription drugs,
mammograms, scans, etc and a stay in hospital is broken down into
treatment costs (for which the state refunds 70%) and accommodation
costs (which the state does not refund).
There is no standard prescription charge. Drugs are priced according to
their content and the state refunds between 35% - 70% of the cost.
For certain illnesses all treatment and associated drugs are free, but your doctor must apply for this cover.
To qualify for any refunds, everyone must sign on with a doctor and
visits to him/her or his deputy will be refunded. (Visits to other GP's
will not).
Dentists are private, again a refund system is used. State refunds for treatment such as crowns are low.
For eye tests you will need to visit an Ophthalmic doctor who will
provide a precription which you then take to the Optician. State
refunds for glasses/lenses are low.
As the state only refunds approximately 70% of costs, the remaining 30%
( or more) can result in very high bills, especially if hospitalisation
is required. Top up health insurance (Assurance Complementaire) is
taken out to help cover the costs not refunded by the state. There are
many different levels of cover available. Choose one that suits your
individual needs.
NOTE; If you are not entitled to an E form, you will not be allowed to
reside in France unless you can prove that you have private medical
insurance. Again after a legal and stable residence for 5 years, you
will be entitled to join the contributory scheme.
